I get some version of this question almost every week now: someone asks for a quote for the same eight or ten cameras they installed two years ago, and the number comes back noticeably higher. Their first reaction is usually that we’re padding the bill.

A textile trader in Millennium Market did exactly this a few months ago. He pulled out his 2023 invoice for the same eight-camera layout and asked why the new quote was nearly 40% higher. Once we walked through it line by line — the HDD alone accounted for a big chunk of the gap, plus the cable spec had gone from CCA to genuine copper after his old wiring showed signal loss during our survey — he understood it wasn’t padding. It was the market.

We’re not. The camera is genuinely the smallest part of what’s changed. Compliance testing, storage, copper, and even the electronics inside the recorder have all moved in the same direction at the same time — and in a lot of cases, what looks like a pricier quote today is actually a more complete system than the stripped-down package people bought a few years back.

Why CCTV camera prices are rising in India

1. Compliance has caught up with the risk. A camera connected to your network isn’t just a lens anymore — it’s an endpoint that can be exploited if the hardware or firmware is weak. STQC (the Standardisation Testing and Quality Certification Directorate, under MeitY) now covers CCTV cameras under its IoT System Certification Scheme.[1][2] Testing, redesign, and certification cost manufacturers money, and that shows up downstream. 2. Fewer models are available mid-transition. When compliance rules shift, distributors’ catalogues shrink temporarily — some models qualify, some get pulled, some are still in the certification pipeline. That’s part of why quotation validity windows have gotten shorter. A rate we quote this week may not hold if your order releases a month later.

3. The hard disk, not the camera, is where the real money moved. This is the one that surprises people most. A tracked basket of mainstream hard drives rose roughly 46% in price over a few months in early 2026.[3] Surveillance-grade HDDs vary by brand and stock, but the direction is the same — and it’s visible in every quotation we write now.

Part of the reason: AI and cloud data centres are eating global storage capacity, and manufacturers are prioritising high-capacity drives for that market.[4][5] CCTV projects are now competing for the same supply.

This is also where two quotes with identical camera counts can differ by tens of thousands of rupees — one is built for 7 days of low-bitrate footage, the other for 30 days of usable evidence. Ask what retention period you’re actually being quoted for.

4. Copper and cable costs are up. Coaxial, CAT6, power cable, connectors — all copper-dependent. The World Bank’s 2026 commodity outlook flagged tight supply and firm gains in copper and aluminium.[6][7] For a small four-camera job the difference is minor. For a warehouse or a multi-block factory with long cable runs, it adds up fast — and it’s also where corner-cutting hides: copper-clad aluminium sold as copper, undersized power runs, no conduit. Works fine on install day, fails in six months.

5. Electronics inside the box are still globally priced. Even India-assembled cameras and recorders often use imported sensors, chipsets and memory. Rupee-dollar movement affects landed cost whether or not the label says “Made in India.”

6. AI is competing with CCTV for the same chips. DRAM, NAND flash, and processors are being pulled toward AI servers and data centres. Entry-level surveillance hardware shares component families with that market, so it isn’t insulated from the price pressure.

7. Expectations for what a camera should do have quietly gone up. A camera used to just prove someone came by. Now people expect face detail, night-time colour, number-plate reads, audio, weatherproofing, remote viewing. Moving from basic HD to 4K doesn’t just raise the camera price — it raises bitrate, storage load, and network demand right behind it.

8. A real IP system includes more than cameras. PoE switches, NVR, CAT6, racks, surge protection, UPS. These aren’t add-ons — they’re what keeps the system recording during a power cut instead of going dark for six hours.

9. Proper installation costs more than mounting a bracket. Site survey, lens angle, safe cable routing, weatherproof termination, password hardening, a real playback test before handover. We saw the alternative firsthand at a jewellery showroom near Parle Point — a previous vendor had mounted the counter camera at a rushed angle that caught the top of customers’ heads instead of their faces. Nobody noticed until they actually needed the

footage. We had to reposition and rewire that one point properly, which cost more in the end than doing it right the first time would have.

10. Some old package prices were simply incomplete. GST, adequate HDD, full cable length, UPS, AMC — a lot of these were quietly excluded from older “budget” packages. Compare full scope, not headline price, before deciding anyone’s overcharging.

The mistake that costs more than the price rise itself

When a quote feels high, the instinct is to trim every line equally — smaller HDD, cheaper cable, lowest bidder for installation. That gets you a system that records everywhere and identifies no one.

A better budget doesn’t spread money evenly. It spends where an incident would actually hurt, and saves where plain visibility is enough.

Get three designs off one site survey — Essential, Recommended, Future-Ready — so you can actually see which spec changes drive the price, instead of comparing three unrelated quotes.

Decide the objective before the megapixels. Detect, observe, recognise, or identify — pick per camera, then size resolution to that job.

Calculate storage; don’t estimate it. Camera count, resolution, frame rate, retention days — ask your supplier to show the math in writing.

Save incident clips separately instead of holding every camera at max quality for months.

Phase the rollout against a finished design, not phase-by-guesswork — so phase two doesn’t mean replacing phase one.

Test old cable before reusing it. Continuity and voltage-drop checks take an hour and can save a rework.

Go hybrid where it’s genuinely justified — keep healthy low-risk cameras, upgrade the identification points and recorder capacity first.

Use wireless only where cabling truly isn’t practical. A busy site usually wants a wired or PoE backbone.

Spend a little on UPS, surge protection and proper earthing. It’s cheaper than the repeat service call.

Price the system over three years, not just on day one.

Lock the bill of materials the moment a project is approved — exact models, HDD capacity, cable type, warranty, validity window.

Before you pick the cheaper one, check that both match on: camera model and certification status; resolution, sensor and low-light performance; indoor/outdoor rating; recorder channels and spare bandwidth; HDD brand, grade, capacity and warranty; stated retention days and the assumptions behind them; cable type and included length; PoE/UPS/surge protection; installation and weatherproofing scope; mobile setup and password hardening; handover and playback testing; warranty and AMC terms; GST and validity.

If either quote is missing half of this, they’re not actually comparable yet — no matter which number looks smaller.

Where not to save money

Camera angle at critical points. Surveillance-grade storage. Real cable and connectors. Safe electrical and outdoor installation. Compliant products where rules require them. Strong passwords and network setup. Power protection for the recorder. A tested handover.

CCTV isn’t there to fill a monitor with tiles. It’s there to give you something usable when something actually goes wrong.
